Hi! I thought some of you techies out ther could help me with a question:
How long can an Ethernet cable be (needed to cover large distances between buildings) - (cabins in the woods in this case) and still perform adequately for normal internet surffing from a satellite modem broadband connection?
For example, if the dish and modem are in one location and we want to connect a second buildning that is 150 feet away WITHOUT USING WIRELESS, can we do it?
THANKS for your advice!
Brook

Re: Tech Question: Ethernet Cables
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 1:25 AMHi Brook,
I have a 100 feet long cable that works fine. I think the limit is 100 meters, that's more than 300 feet. If the signal is to weak, you would probably need a repeater...

Re: Tech Question: Ethernet Cables
Wed, October 25, 2006 - 9:24 AMThe technical spec for Ethernet states that you can run a length of cable 100 meters (300ft). For what you are talking about though, you might want to find some way to isolate your cable so that you don't fry your devices in a lightning strike. Say like fiber with Ethernet converters on each end. A 200ft length of MultiMode fiber and two converts (you can find those at blackbox.com) should run you less then 500.00 or so.
