Hello everybody,
Here's the problem: I installed OS X Server 10.4 on a G4 (1.2 GHz) and started building a file serving system for 4 to 6 users. Everything worked fine until I tried to have some users access the server via ftp. Now I can't launch afp services anymore (no errors, but no launching either), I can't start-up the computer from a) another harddisk b) a CD/DVD - all I get is a "wrong way" sign...
I zapped the PRAM and repaired permissions... Any ideas?
TIA,
Tarek

Wed, April 5, 2006 - 1:58 PMNot really an answer, but you might start by checking the log files. /Applications/Utilities/Console.app
You may also wish to try editing /etc/hostconfig by hand. I'm not sure if it will help, but it could be a place to start. -

Re: I can't find my way out of this one...
Wed, April 5, 2006 - 2:13 PMHello Milo,
The error seems to be "unable to register IPC port" (As stated in one of the logs - AppleFileServiceslog, I think). Rebooting doesn't help that one.
I couldn't find the hostconfig file anywhere on the server.
I wish I could reboot fom the original Server disk and re-install the whole thing. Far less trouble IMHO, but the machine won't let me boot from another device... "you can't do that, Dave..."
Thanx,

Re: I can't find my way out of this one...
Wed, April 5, 2006 - 5:49 PMhave you tried nuking the firmware?
shutdown, count to 120 or get a cuppa or smoke or whatev
restart, holding Command-Option-O-F
you will boot into the G4's firmware
in the console, type:
reset_nvram
>ok
reset_all
and your machine should reboot
If you have the startup disc in, you should hold down the "C" key (or "option" or back to the firmware") and boot off that.
hope that helps.

Re: I can't find my way out of this one...
Thu, April 6, 2006 - 1:15 AMHi Milo,
I did a resetting of everything, but the machine would only boot off the initial HD, the one with the server software, I'm still locked out with any other device (HD or even the start-up CD/DVD).... Very weird.

Re: I can't find my way out of this one...
Fri, April 7, 2006 - 12:05 AMFeedback:
I finally found the problem: apparently the machine fried the DVD drive AND corrupted the system on the internal back-up HD, all in one go! I succeeded (after 3 tries) to boot from a Ti-book in target mode and from there on found out about the rest. I exchanged the DVD drive and reinstalled Os X Server and eve got a bonus! My 10 seat serial number now gives me unlimited seats!
Anyway, just a note to say thanks!

Thu, June 1, 2006 - 1:29 AMRe: feedback.
I had the same problem at a clients site and only AFTER the 10.4.6 upgrade (on the server side). The simplest solution is to unshare all the points and re-share them again.
