When the Dock crashes it is not possible to restart the Dock process. It's also not possible for the user to log out or restart the computer as the computer will hang during the log out process. It is possible, however, to log into a local user (a local admin user), where the Dock works fine, lauch a terminal window, and perform a "sudo shutdown -r now" command to restart the computer.

I'm running 10.4.4 on all the network machines with 10.4 Server hosting the LDAP database. I've got mobile user turned on for my laptop, just in case that might matter.

Here's the problem: I installed OS X Server 10.4 on a G4 (1.2 GHz) and started building a file serving system for 4 to 6 users. Everything worked fine until I tried to have some users access the server via ftp. Now I can't launch afp services anymore (no errors, but no launching either), I can't start-up the computer from a) another harddisk b) a CD/DVD - all I get is a "wrong way" sign...

I zapped the PRAM and repaired permissions... Any ideas?
First, I added all the users via the Manager yesterday and put the shared files in the public folder on the HD. All user were able to log on and use the shared datafile of our point of sale system.

When I came into work this morning it appeared that several interesting things occured during the night. All of the client connections to the server had timed out, the IP address of the server had changed (to a number completely different from our scheme) and I could not browse to the server and its new IP from any of the clients.

After a little adjusting I was able to have DHCP assign a new IP (one in our scheme) and get all the clients back online with the server, even though I had to connect to the server by manually entering the IP rather than being able to browse for it.

Do any of you have any idea on why these things might be happening i.e. IP address changing overnight, server connection timing out, not being able to browse for the server from a client?

Hey Peggers and Pegees,
It's your humble Moderator here. I got an email last night saying that Tribe is enabling a feature that will turn these topics into RSS feeds that can be picked up and carried across the net. At least, that's my simple understanding of it. In my opinion, i would rather not let others repost this content. I like the fact that people have to join tribe to read and participate. But that's just me. Please read the email from Tribe.Team and let me know what you want to do.

Thanks,
Milo

----- Insert -------

Hello, Tribe Moderator!

In a few days, Tribe.net will add a new feature that allows your Tribe's
members to automatically download discussion threads to a computer, or
publish them on a Web site. These RSS feeds will be available for all
Public and Moderated Tribes -- RSS is a data format that allows people
to easily share and syndicate online content.

Offering members an RSS feed for your Tribe has several benefits:

- Members receive the latest messages from a discussion *as soon as
they're posted.*
- Anyone can post the URL for your Tribe's RSS feed in an email
signature or on other networking sites, which will bring in many more
participants.
- Members can offer RSS feeds in their blogs, so your Tribe will be read
far and wide.

If you make an RSS feed available, your Tribe's content may appear:

- On Web sites that carry RSS feeds
- In other people's blogs
- In newsreaders (software that downloads RSS feeds to a personal
computer)

Once we roll out this feature, all Public and Moderated Tribes will
default to having their RSS feeds enabled. Private Tribes may *not* be
distributed via RSS.

If you don't want to syndicate your Tribe's discussion board, click the
"Manage Tribe" button that appears on the right side of your Tribe's
main page. On the next page that appears, uncheck the box next to
"Syndicate this Tribe's discussion board," then click "Submit" to save
your changes.

Any questions about this new feature? Read the RSS help text that
appears in your Tribe, or send a line to help@tribe.net, and we'll get
back to you.

Best,

-- The Tribe.net Team

Hey all,

I'm having the weirdest esperience with PHP web pages after my upgrade to OS X Server 10.3 on my XServe.

PHP seems to work, technically, but all the PHP services I had set up on my intranet don't work anymore, such as Sune Alexandersen's webexplorer (provides FTP-like file navigation over web) and online forms created with PHPforms don't do things like actually browse my file structure or send emails when they're supposed to.

My company's in a tizzy, and I dunno enough about PHP under OS X (really PHP in general) to effectively troubleshoot.

Can anyone help? Drop me a message on Tribe and maybe I can pick someone's brain on here? :-\

*HELP!*

(And yet, phpicalendar works!)

I constantly need to explain to folks why I use Mac OS X Server. I came across this page earlier today:

http://www.netcraft.com/survey/Reports/200401/graphs.html

It shows how Apache is just dominating the web server market.

The reason I use Mac OS X Server is because it integrates all my favorite open source services/utilities/whathaveyou. I don't have to spend my time compiling my latest version of Perl/Ruby/Apache/Postfix... whatever.

I know other vendors are doing it, but... and this is the bug but... they don't have the Mac OS X front-end. End of story.

The last thing I need to do is spend an entire Saturday re-installing CommuniGate Pro, SpamAssassin, and much much more after finding things hosed after an attempted upgrade. Unfortunately, a 2-server solution wouldn't work. We only have the one.
Thanks!

If so...why? What's better about Panther Server in terms of File Sharing, Email Server, and Web Service?
